PS Mary Muthoni Meets NAD to Boost Deaf Health Access and Inclusion

Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, held discussions with leaders from the Nairobi Association of the Deaf (NAD) to address critical health issues affecting the Deaf community in Nairobi. Key among the discussions was improving access to BERA assessments, with plans to equip county hospitals with the necessary machines to provide affordable and effective hearing tests. They also explored incorporating BERA assessments into Social Health Authority (SHA) coverage for both civil servants and other members of the Deaf community, alongside fast-tracking SHA training and registration for Deaf individuals. The meeting also emphasized the need for inclusive employment opportunities for Deaf people within the health sector. Additionally, NAD leaders sought the Ministry’s support in organizing the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) Conference scheduled for August 2024.
